10 Best Main Characters In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

by Uneeb Khan

The Voice of the Kingdom.

Voice actors in video games don’t always get credit for how much they help a game do well. Most games don’t make a big deal about their character actors, unlike movies and TV shows. In movies and TV shows, the actors, whether they are animated or real people, get the most credit.

But the voices behind the animated figures can have a big effect on how a game is played. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is no different, and all of the talented voice actors in the game have their own amazing stories and resumes. Let’s take a closer look at some of the people who brought the moving story of Tears of the Kingdom to life. Most likely, you already know more of their work than you think.

Link with a New Arm on a Sky Island in Tears of the Kingdom

Kengo Takanashi is one of the only Japanese players in the English voice cast, and he has been in several versions of Tears of the Kingdom that have been translated. Link is known for being quiet, and when he does talk, he usually doesn’t say anything and just makes hand motions. Link comes to life in other ways, though, especially through his fight yells, pain groans, and labored breathing.

Takanashi has also given the warrior of few words his voice in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Patricia Summersett As Princess Zelda

Princess Zelda in Spirit Form in The Temple of Time

Patricia Summersett, an experienced voice actor who played Princess Zelda in Breath of the Wild, may have the most recognizable voice in Tears of the Kingdom. In fact, Summersett was the first person to give Princess Zelda an official English speech in Nintendo’s history.

Summersett gives Zelda a royal attitude and a strong sense of justice for the people of Hyrule through her schooling and training in classical acting. Zelda’s voice sounds like she’s holding back tears as she begs Link to find her. Summersett sings in an art-folk group and has won championships as a skilled ice dancer when she is not making video games.

Matthew Mercer As Ganondorf

Ganondorf's Corpse Reanimating

He has come back! And he really has something against Link and Zelda. Matthew Mercer plays the famous man from the desert. He has produced and acted in many video games, including Fire Emblem and Persona 5.

The unique and interesting world of Critical Role was largely made possible by Mercer’s passionate voice and business sense. He also came up with the idea for The Legend of Vox Machina and did the voice acting for it. With several Behind The Voice Actors (BTVA) awards under his belt, Mercer is sure to give Ganondorf’s famous character a level of energy and casual cruelty.

Catherine Higgins As Purah

Purah in Glasses in Front of Lookout Landing's Tower

In Tears of the Kingdom, Purah, everyone’s favorite young scientist, is back for more adventure. Now, her shape has changed from that of a pre-teen to that of a very stylish young adult.

In Tears of the Kingdom, Catherine Higgins brings Purah’s bubbly energy and no-nonsense attitude to life. Higgins is known for voicing characters in English anime, and he has also brought Tails from the Sonic the Hedgehog series to life in different versions of the Sega brand. Higgins also lends her voice to Disney’s Princess Aurora right now, a part that probably benefits from her experience as a singer.

Joe Hernandez As Yunobo

Yunobo in Armor

Joe Hernandez gives the big lump of rock, Yunobo, personality and grit as the wise Goron Yunobo. Hernandez is no new to the Legend of Zelda series. He has voiced characters in both Breath of the Wild and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

He has also worked on Hunter x Hunter, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Berserk, among other anime movies, games, and shows. Hernandez makes Yunobo a real person who has to learn (no pun meant) the hard way that his actions have consequences.

Andi Gibson As Impa

Impa Standing in Hyrule Field

In The Ocarina of Time, Impa was a young woman who was in charge of keeping the bad forces away from Princess Zelda. Impa is no longer a fighter in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Her smart mind and even sharper tongue make her an important part of Hyrule’s battle against Ganondorf.

Andi Gibson, who voiced Impa in both Breath of the Wild and Hyrule Warriors, is back to do it again. Gibson lives in Santa Monica, California, and has written songs for shows like Bugs Bunny Builders.

Elizabeth Maxwell As Riju

Riju with Her Sword

Riju is one of the best female characters in The Legend of Zelda games, and Elizabeth Maxwell gives her a voice that fits her well. At the beginning of her work, Maxwell was in short films on the internet. Later, she moved on to dubbing anime. She has also had roles on Criminal Minds, Attack on Titan, and Attack on Titan: Junior High.

Maxwell did the voices for both Riju and Urbosa in Breath of the Wild. Urbosa was the winner Link fought with after he beat Vah Naboris in the Gerudo desert.

Jamie Mortellaro As Sidon

Sidon at Mipha's Spring of Wisdom

Sidon is probably the most memorable royal character in Drift Boss and Tears of the Kingdom (besides Princess Zelda, of course). Sidon is the hero of the Zora and Link’s best fighter friend. He has bright white teeth and a glint in his eye.

This charming figure is brought to life by James D. Mortellaro, who also works as a voice director for Breath of the Wild. Mortellaro’s acting and directing skills have been used in another great Nintendo game: Detective Pikachu.

Cristina Valenzuela As Tulin

Tulin of the Rito

As the young Rito sage Tulin, who is bold and brave, Cristina Valenzuela gives voice to the next generation of Hyrule fighters. In a story full of sadness and division, Tulin’s infectious energy and drive to prove himself worthy of the Rito name stand out like a bright star.

Valenzuela also played another part that fans of the Disney+ show Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir will definitely remember. As Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Ladybug’s alter ego, Valenzuela was just as sincere and sure of herself as she is in Tears of the Kingdom with Tulin.

Chris Hackney As King Rauru

Rauru in Spirit Form on a Sky Island in Tears of the Kingdom

King Rauru is the first ruler of Hyrule. He leads Link and Zelda on their journey to beat Ganondorf. Chris Hackney, who did the voices for Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and The Tower, does the voice of the dead king of the country. Hackney has worked on shows like Attack on Titan and Scarlet Nexus, where he has played digital characters with souls that jump off the screen and into players’ living rooms.

Even though Tears of the Kingdom can be played without sound, the great character actors are a big reason not to. Without sound, you might miss some of the story’s more subtle emotional details and funny lines. How can you find and save Princess Zelda if you can’t even hear her words over the Hyrule wind?
