7 Greatest Games That Revolve Around AI

by Zohaib Khan

The most important part of these games is the AI.

Most of the time, when people talk about AI in video games, they mean the NPCs you meet or fight. But sometimes the idea of AI also plays a part in the major story. For example, a game could be about fighting against or talking to intelligent robots. Some books even think about whether or not AI can really be living.

No matter how they are used in a story, artificial intelligence (AI) is an interesting topic. It’s even more interesting when it’s in a well-made and, more importantly, well-written game. In the following great games, this is the case.

Portal 2

Most video games about AI tend to be serious and hard to understand. One game that isn’t like this is Portal 2, where things are usually simple and funny but still interesting. You play as a test subject who is locked in an abandoned lab and has to solve problems to get out.

It’s abandoned because there are no people there, but there are some robots. The two most important AIs are called GlaDOS and Wheatly. Even though they are enemies, they do share some things. First of all, they’re both funny and say a lot of funny things during the game. The second trouble is that they both want to run the facility, which makes things hard for you.

NieR: Automata

In sci-fi stories, people and machines often fight with each other. But in NieR Automata, robots fight against androids. In the action role-playing game, you take control of robots made by humans and tell them to fight mechanical creatures from another world that have come to Earth.

But that’s a very simple way to tell the story, which is much deeper and more complicated than it sounds at first. So, you have to play it more than once to get the whole picture and understand everything. But one thing is clear: AI is at the center of it all.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn is an action-adventure game that takes place in a world after the end of the world. People live in small groups, and big mechanical beasts roam the wild. These robots aren’t the most advanced in the history of video games, since they mostly act like wild animals.

But, without giving away too much, the main story of 8 Ball Pool game is all about real AI. You don’t find out about this in the first scene. Information about the AI, where the main character came from, and what happened to the world slowly comes out as the game goes on.

Halo 4

Halo, one of the most famous first-person shooter games, has always had AI characters. Cortana is the most well-known example and one of the best AIs in the history of video games.

Even though AI is a big part of the series, the early games don’t really focus on it. The story of Halo 4, on the other hand, is all about AI. In it, Cortana has a problem called “Rampancy” that has a big effect on her mind and how she works. On top of that, the Prometheans, who are mostly machines that don’t seem to be very smart, are the major group of bad guys you have to deal with.

Mass Effect Series

In the world of Mass Effect, it is against the law to make AI because when the Quarians did it, they lost their homeworld. The things they made were called Geth, and you fight them all through the game. But they aren’t the main threat from machines.

Synthetics called Reapers are the main bad guys. Their job is to wait until a society is at its strongest point and then wipe it out. This happens in cycles, and in the first three Mass Effect games, it’s time to wipe out all the developed races in the Milky Way. In this action-RPG series, your main goal is to figure out how to stop them.

Metal Gear Solid Series

In Metal Gear Solid, one of the most famous stealth games, AI isn’t always the most important thing. Still, AI is a big part of the overall story. In the modern games in the series, the group called “The Patriots” is led by a number of AIs.

Most of what The Patriots do is kept secret, just like any well-run secret group. But they have power over the President, the military, and almost all digital information, so they really run the whole country. And most people don’t know anything about it. Those who do try to fight back against them, though. In this way, they are the main bad guys in the story.

Detroit: Become Human

The story of AI in Detroit: Become Human is more grounded and real than in most sci-fi games. So, it’s not set in a crazy fantasy world, and it’s not about threats from other planets. The story-based action game takes place in the real world, though it is set in the future. And in this world, AIs are robots made to do what people want.

Some of these androids break their code because they are treated badly and disrespected all the time. But these machines don’t start killing people right away. Instead, they try to get better care and equal rights. This makes a gap between people and AI. What happens depends on what decisions you make with each character.
