by Andrew Jonathan

Do you own a PMI credential? Are you also a certified PMP? Then you’ll find this article helpful!

Except for CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management), all PMI certifications require their holders to adhere to the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Program. EDUHUBSPOT’S goal is to guarantee that your knowledge and credentials are up to date. To keep your PMP certification, you often need to obtain Professional Development Units (PDUs) and for that some best project management courses are very important.

The PMP certification cycle is 3 years long, and after that time, you must have acquired 60 PDUs to renew your certification. A new 3-year cycle starts after one cycle is finished.

Keep your PMP certification active with the CCR program

Your first CCR cycle starts as soon as you pass the test and lasts for three years after that. So, before the end of the three-year certification cycle, you must renew your PMP certification.

The goal of this program is to aid project managers in developing their careers. Due to changes in the business environment, PMI decided to offer the optimum skill set, also known as the PMI Talent triangle. The three abilities that makeup the PMI Talent Triangle are:

  • Technical Project Management
  • Leadership
  • Competence in business and strategic management

1. Managing technical projects:

The knowledge and behaviors associated with projects, programs, and portfolio management make up this kind of skill set. Additionally, it includes technical information about the project activities. e.g., take into account that you are engaged in “pipeline construction” work. As a project manager, you should be technically knowledgeable about the building materials used and knowledgeable about the various testing techniques.

2. Leadership:

Leadership qualities make up the second leg of the talent triangle. To fulfill corporate business goals, this type of skill set comprises leadership-specific knowledge and behaviors. The project managers’ long-term success depends on having these skills. Examples include persuasion, dialogue, problem-solving, handling conflicts, inspiring, coaching, etc.

3. Business and strategic management:

The third arm focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary to improve organizational performance and produce the best commercial results. Knowledge of products and industries, business awareness, marketing, customer and innovation strategy alignment, finance marketing, and many more are examples of skills in strategic and business management.

After completing the PMP exam prep course, there are several ways to earn PDUs.

PDU certification is easy to obtain and less expensive, and some PDUs can even be obtained for free. This article will explain how to obtain PDUs following the successful completion of PMP certification. Earning PDUs is possible in two ways:

A. Education PDUs

B. Giving back PDUs

1) Education PDUs:

The following three methods can be used to obtain education PDUs:

  • Courses and training provided by a PMI-registered education provider are available online or in person (REPs)
  • Continuous Learning (professional meetings and local events)
  • Self-directed education

You can obtain up to 35 PDUs via educational PDUs. Eight of the 35 PDUs are composed of technical project management abilities, eight of which are leadership skills, and eight of which are composed of strategic business management skills. The PMI refers to these three skill sets as a “PMI Talent Triangle.”

2) Giving back PDUs:

Sharing knowledge and using skills to advance the profession are two ways to earn PDUs. This comprises-

  • Developing knowledge
  • Delivering a speech
  • Producing content
  • Practicing as a professional
  • Providing information
  • Volunteering

You can receive a maximum of 25 PDUs from this category by returning PDUs. The ways to earn PDUs in this area are listed below.

Working as a Professional: This category allows for a maximum of 8 PDUs to be earned.

The remaining PDUs are obtained under the categories of creating knowledge and volunteering.

Attending a training course is the quickest way to obtain a block of PDUs in each of the three categories. This method not only assists in learning project management but also in obtaining more PDUs. In terms of acquiring PDUs too soon, this method of obtaining them is more effective. Along with the PDUs, this improves your skill set and gives your resume a little extra weight.
