Discover the National Game of Australia

by Uneeb Khan

The Australia Football League, or AFL, is the world’s second largest sport by attendance and the national game of Australia. It’s a hugely popular spectator sport that revolves around the sport of Australian Rules Football, or Aussie Rules as it’s known locally in Oz. Let’s take a look at some facts about this exciting game…

What is Football?

Football, more commonly known as Soccer, is one of the most popular sports in the world. It was created in England during the nineteenth century, and it eventually spread to other parts of Europe and South America. Over time, it has grown into a hugely popular sport with tens of millions of players across many countries.

Today there are two categories for Football: Association Football (which includes England) and Rugby Football (which includes France). A combination of these two different styles is known as Australian Rules Football. Australians also play some hybridized games that combine aspects from Rugby or Soccer with aspects from Rugby League or Australian Football to create unique regional games such as Gaelic football or Rounders (sometimes called Baseball in America).

How Did Australian Rules Football Originate?

Australian Rules Football is a high contact sport with many similarities to rugby. It is thought that Australian Rules football first started as a way for cricketers to keep in shape during winter breaks, and these formal games later led to the development of a code uniquely suited to Australian conditions. The origins of Australian Rules football are unclear but are thought to have been inspired by other team sports from the United Kingdom, most notably rugby football, which was introduced by British settlers in Australasia. The reason it became so popular in Australia was that unlike rugby it did not require any space for spectators and players could get close enough together without equipment to make physical contact – making it ideal for ‘footy’ played on crowded suburban ovals.

Why Do People Enjoy it?

One might not immediately guess that national game Australia, but it does! The Australian Football League (AFL) is one of the country’s largest sports leagues. Much like football in the United States, this is an incredibly popular spectator sport. Each club trains 18 or so professional players who compete in fast-paced, physically demanding games over an eighteen round season each year. Games are played at night and there are many different ways to watch them as well: at home on TV or radio broadcasts, by tuning into radio coverage at a pub or restaurant with a big screen TV, or even by attending matches in person!

Footy fans go wild for any chance to see their favorite players and clubs play live.

Who Is Playing?

The most popular team sport in Australia is a competition known as Australian Rules Football. This game was created by Tom Wills in 1858 and is also referred to as Aussie Rules or Footy. The game has two teams with eighteen players on each side. Players are allowed to carry an unlimited number of times but when they don’t, it’s called marking, which happens when a player runs behind their opponents and touches their opponents’ team logo at the back of their shorts before running back to his side of the field.

What Equipment do you Need?

Aussie Rules football does not require any equipment. When playing other sports like basketball, soccer, or American football, in addition to footwear (usually just sneakers), you also need a ball, goal posts, and boundary lines.

Aussie Rules football has no time limit (other than when players agree) and no penalties for a foul. That means there are also no free throws or penalty shots, though an umpire can eject players who deliberately break the rules. Soccer features two 45-minute halves with a 15-minute half-time break at some levels; both sides can change goals if they want to. There is also no offside rule or word limit on foul language in soccer games, so this game is the perfect place for rowdy fans to get their fix!

How Can I Learn More About Australian Rules Football?

Formal information about Australian Rules Football is hard to come by, but it has a few features that make it different from most other football codes. To begin with, it’s played on an oval field rather than a rectangular one and there are no goal posts at either end. These conditions make scoring more difficult – hence the popular name the game without much (or any) point. As well as this, players on offence cannot be tackled by members of their own team – they can only be tackled by players from the opposition and if this occurs, then an overlap can occur where each player is in contact with both tackler and ball carrier. And finally, only one player from each team can stand inside the centre square in defence during a stoppage in play.
