Everything You Must Know About Altcoins: Advantages and Disadvantages, Types, and Trends

by Henry Jackson

The share of altcoins in the crypto market is about 60%. Their total value in mid-2022 amounted to approximately $1 trillion. In this article, we will figure out what altcoins are, how they differ from bitcoin, and whether it is worth investing in such crypto assets in 2022.

Some words about altcoins

The altcoin is all cryptocurrency created as an alternative to Bitcoin (BTC). Some financial experts claim all digital money except Bitcoin to be altcoins since most virtual money forks into one of these two. Altcoins are positioned as the best replacement for BTC.

The emergence of bitcoin as the first peer-to-peer digital currency paved the way for many alternatives to fiat money. Most altcoins seek to eliminate the shortcomings of Bitcoin and find competitive advantages in updated versions. One of the successful altcoin cases is Solana; on a particular website, you may find the solana price and other characteristics of such a blockchain project.

Understanding altcoins

The term “altcoin” consists of several parts: alt is an “alternative”, and a “coin”. Together, these two elements create a category of cryptocurrency that is an alternative to bitcoin. Altcoins are associated with blockchains that were created specifically for them. A large group of altcoins is forks, the separation of the blockchain, which is incompatible with the initial chain, from Bitcoin or Ethereum. There are many reasons for forks. Conflicts often arise between the creators of digital assets, and some developers decide to create their own currencies.

Types of altcoins

Experts distinguish various kinds of altcoins:

  • Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies whose value is pegged to traditional assets. It is often a fiat currency, that is, real money. The value of stablecoins can also be linked to precious metals or other cryptocurrencies.
  • Meme coins are digital currencies created on a basis of famous memes. If bitcoin is mined in a limited amount, then meme coins are issued constantly. Their price depends on the participation of society. Often the owners of meme coins are famous people.
  • Utility tokens give access to the goods or services of a specific organization on a specified blockchain network.
  • Governance tokens guarantee certain benefits. For example, their owner can take part in blockchain-related surveys.
  • Security tokens are digital versions of securities. In other words, you can get security tokens if you tokenize stocks and bonds. However, they cannot be equated with cryptocurrencies. Security tokens do not form a new blockchain but work on one of the previously created ones.
  • Forks are the division of a blockchain into several parts. There are soft forks in which all network changes are compatible with legacy versions. Hard forks require a radical change to the blockchain network, incompatible with the old mining programs.

Nowadays, the market capitalization of altcoins exceeds $5.8 billion.

Advantages and disadvantages of altcoins

The creators of altcoins try to eliminate all the flaws of bitcoins, so this is an improved variant of the first virtual money. The main advantages of alternative crypto:

  • Altcoins are easy to mine. Mining requires less energy if they do not work based on the Proof-of-Work system.
  • Each altcoin has its functionality, which makes them unique.
  • Today, more than 10 thousand altcoins are known, so investors have an unlimited choice. Their cost also varies greatly.

Altcoins also have a downside:

  • The main disadvantage of digital money is the lack of influence due to the dominance of bitcoin in the market.
  • Sometimes the creators, to quickly launch altcoins, do not create anything new but copy the source code of other coins. Such a cryptocurrency is underdeveloped.
  • The application of altcoins is limited, since they are not accepted everywhere as a means of payment.

It is difficult to define the difference between various altcoins and their use areas, which makes investing difficult.

What awaits altcoins in the future

It is hardly possible to discuss the emergence of a single cryptocurrency in current affairs. However, most likely, thousands of altcoins that are listed in the cryptocurrency industry will soon disappear. Experts predict that the market will unite around a group of digital money with maximum completeness, various use cases, and a definite aim for the blockchain.

Investors who plan to diversify risks should remember that altcoins are often cheaper than bitcoins. The cryptocurrency industry is young and unstable, so crypto assets should be treated cautiously.

All cryptocurrencies are called altcoin, except for bitcoin (sometimes also except for Ethereum). Usually, this is an improved version of the first cryptocurrency. For example, less power is required to create blocks, or a blockchain network can efficiently work with smart contracts. However, altcoins have less influence due to underdevelopment.
