Eye Damage and Long Term Use of Elmiron

by Uneeb Khan

Using a dietary supplement like Elmiron for the long term is very dangerous. It can cause toxicity in your body. It can even cause damage to your eyes. If you are pregnant or nursing, it can be even more harmful.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Whether you are a new parent or an old hand at breastfeeding, you may be wondering if it is safe to use Elmiron during pregnancy. It is not recommended as a breastfeedable medication, and it should be avoided by all means.

Elmiron is a medication that helps treat bladder irritation. It is available in capsules that you take by mouth. It is usually prescribed to be taken one hour before or two hours after a meal.

Its official name is pentosan polysulfate sodium. It is a relatively safe medication, but it does have a few drawbacks. It can cause some allergic reactions, and it may interact with other medications.

It is also a blood thinner, which can increase the risk of bleeding. You should inform your doctor of any other blood thinning medications that you are taking.

Macular eye damage

Several studies have shown that long-term use of Elmiron may cause vision problems. One study found that twenty-two patients who took the drug for fifteen years showed signs of eye damage. Another found that patients who took the drug for ten years or longer had more serious eye problems.

Many of these cases were initially diagnosed with macular retinopathy. However, there are some who have developed other types of eye disease as a result of long-term Elmiron use.

Researchers at the Emory Eye Center have published a study stating that the drug is toxic to the retina. The report says that patients who had been exposed to Elmiron for a long time should discontinue treatment. This may prevent further damage from occurring.

Other studies have also shown that Elmiron users have a higher risk of developing macular problems than those who have not taken the drug. These findings were announced in an article published by the Canadian Urological Association Journal.

Retinal damage

Earlier this year, researchers published a study showing that long term use of Elmiron can cause eye damage. This is important because Elmiron is a prescription drug used to treat interstitial cystitis. It is thought that long term use of this medication can damage the retina.

The study looked at 4.3 million patients from Kaiser Permanente. It found that more than one-third of those taking Elmiron had vision problems. Some of those patients were initially diagnosed with macular degeneration, pattern dystrophy, or retinal deterioration.

The study also found that the risk of eye damage increased with the amount of Elmiron a patient was prescribed. For example, if a patient took 500 grams or more, he or she was at a higher risk of suffering from eye damage.

Retinal toxicity

Using the drug Elmiron for years may cause structural damage to the retina. This can lead to permanent vision loss. Patients who have used Elmiron for a long time should be screened for eye damage at least once a year. It’s important to be aware of the risk, especially if you use Elmiron to treat interstitial cystitis.

The macula is a light-sensing part of the retina. It’s responsible for central vision, color vision, and fine detail. When this part of the eye is damaged, it can cause distorted linear objects. It also can lead to unilateral blindness. Fortunately, there are ways to treat this condition. It can be prevented if it’s caught early.

The study of six adult patients at Emory University School of Medicine found a connection between their use of Elmiron and retinal problems. Researchers advised them to stop taking the medication and urged them to undergo retinal imaging.

Macular degeneration

Taking Elmiron for macular degeneration can cause irreversible eye damage. It is unclear why but it may be toxic to retina. If you have been taking the drug for a while, you might want to have your eyes checked regularly.

A new study shows that people who use Elmiron for macular degeneration have a higher risk of developing a condition called pigmentary maculopathy. This condition can make it harder to read and do close up work. It is similar to age-related macular degeneration. It can also cause distortions in linear objects.

One study looked at patients who took the drug for a year or longer. It found that 25% of the patients showed signs of eye damage. Those who had taken the medication for more than 15 years had a greater risk.
