The Championship Matches You Need to Know For Boxing Day

by Uneeb Khan

If you’re a football fan, chances are you’ll have a few things on your mind as you get ready for the Championship matches that will be taking place on Boxing Day. But what can you expect from the games, which teams will be in contention, and how should you be preparing?

Tottenham Hotspur

Boxing Day is a busy time in English football. It’s a day when all the leagues in England play and families gather around the television. For Spurs fans, it’s a chance to see their team in action again.

Tottenham Hotspur haven’t lost on Boxing Day since 2003. That’s one of the longest unbeaten runs in the top four tiers of English football. Now, they have a real chance of winning a trophy this season. They need Harry Kane and Son Heung-min to hit form. And, in the FA Cup, they have a great chance of going through to the quarter-finals.

The last time Tottenham Hotspur won a major trophy was in the 2008 Carling Cup Final. However, they had to endure a difficult spell before winning it.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United are hoping to get their season back on track with a Boxing Day win. Despite having a decent start to the season, they have suffered a couple of defeats. And they are now six points off the top four. However, they can still pull away from the relegation zone if they beat Manchester City.

The Magpies are due to travel to King Power Stadium on Boxing Day, where they will play Leicester City. They are expected to be boosted by the return of Kieran Trippier after a World Cup break.

Newcastle will also hope to get the return of Fabricio Coloccini. He picked up a thigh injury on international duty with Sweden, but will be back in training next month.

Newcastle will also have another player back in the squad, as Ryan Bertrand is on the comeback trail. However, Ricardo Pereira is still recovering.

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough will be looking to end their season on a high as they host Wigan on Boxing Day. A victory could leave them three points clear of the relegation zone. Boro are currently in the middle of a resurgent run of form. They have won four out of their last five games.

Middlesbrough beat Luton Town 2-1 in their previous match. This was Middlesbrough’s first win on Boxing Day for a number of years.

Middlesbrough have played two games since the World Cup ended. One was a 2-2 draw against QPR and the other was a 2-0 victory over Sunderland. However, they lost 3-1 at Burnley on Saturday.

Boro’s head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that he will line up with the same side for the visit of Wigan. The former Manchester United midfielder has won four out of his seven matches as a manager.

Derby County

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Derby County have struggled to find their feet this season. They’ve had four wins and 11 draws from 25 Championship games so far, and currently sit sixth in the table. But it’s not just the team’s performances that’ve been the headlines.

The club has faced a 21-point deduction. It’s a significant one, considering that the club was already a candidate for relegation.

In addition to the points deduction, Derby County have also been the victim of some financial chicanery. After going into administration, they weren’t top up 80% of the government’s wages. This has led to the club racking up debts of around PS60M.

A nine-point deduction was also applied after the club admitted additional breaches. Luckily, the EFL has won its appeal against Derby’s amortisation method.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are preparing to face Middlesbrough on Boxing Day. A packed City Ground is expected for the fixture, and will be a welcome boost to the team’s hopes of staying in the top flight. The team has won six of their last eight games, and have been unbeaten in their last nine on the road.

In the summer, Nottingham Forest have made several high profile signings. Two of these are Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi and Barcelona midfielder Pedro. Another is Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Serge Aurier.

David Johnson has made over 400 appearances for the club. His performances have been critical in allowing the team to avoid relegation. He has scored 130 goals for the team.

After a disastrous start to the season, Joe Kinnear has brought the team back to form. They have lost just one of their last 16 matches. That includes a 2-1 victory over Hull in the city ground.
