The EVO will celebrate its 2020 edition online

by Uneeb Khan

The restrictions imposed by the coronavirus crisis force EVO 2020 to be held online, which will play its competitions on the weekends of July.

The expansion of the coronavirus and the restrictions that governments around the world have been forced to impose will prevent EVO 2020 from being held in the way we are used to.

The possibility of altering the event so that it can be held telematically will mean that this edition does not have to be suspended, although it does change its operation and celebration in a large arena with a dedicated audience.

The Evolution Championship Series is considered by lovers of fighting games as the World Cup of the genre, and every year it brings together millions of spectators eager to vibrate with the stars of each title.

It was planned that this edition would be moved to Las Vegas in August, at the Mandalay Bay, but it had to be cancelled. Instead, they will be held on the five weekends in July, specifically on the following dates:

  • 4 y 5
  • 11 y 12
  • 18 y 19
  • 25 y 26
  • From August 31, 1 and 2

The organization has also confirmed that in addition to the classic titles that will bring together the best players in each discipline, they will hold open titles such as Killer Instinct , Skullgirls 2nd Encore , Them’s Fightin’ Herds and Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath.

These will be the main ones, since the online competition is very similar to the face-to-face competition and they are the ones that offer the best competitive conditions to their participants.

EVO 2020 games

The games that will make up the official competition are: Tekken 7, Soul Calibur VI, Street Fighter Champion Edition, Granblue Fantasy Versus, Dragon Ball Fighter Z , Samurai Shodown and Under Night In-Birth . That yes, its modality will be of invitation , since some of these games present a quite defective online , with a very high ping that will prevent professionals from being able to play in the best conditions.

Although it will not have the same aftertaste of competition as in previous editions, Spain will continue to be very attentive to what happens in the Dragon Ball title , where Joan Namay ‘Shanks’, who last year achieved a more than creditable fourth place , will once again put the country upside down.

The player was the only European in the top 8, which he occupied along with 5 Japanese and 2 Americans, also becoming the first Spaniard to have achieved a ‘diploma’ in a tournament of the stature of the EVO.

Smash Bros, out again

One of the great absences will be, one more year, Super Smash Brosh , which was planned in the face-to-face tournament, but due to problems in the online has had to be removed from the grid.

Fans of the Nintendo fighting crossover will be left without their long-awaited tournament , although this time they will have no reason to complain about the attention given since it was one of the great attractions of the event in Mandalay Bay.

Lovers of the fighting game, which brings together countless Nintendo characters, have mixed feelings about the organization of the EVO. First of all, they blame them for having excluded them from the best tournaments in recent years . Second, when they include them, they don’t give them the importance they think they deserve.

This is what happened in the last EVO Japan, held at the end of January, whose first prize for the winner was a professional Switch controller, something that pissed off the professional circuit quite a bit.

A good part of the public that closely follows the competitive scene, far from pointing the finger at the organization for this decision, has targeted Nintendo and taken the opportunity to demand that they improve their online service.

Another tournament that could be left out, in the absence of official confirmation, is the Tournament of Champions , a party that coincided with the 20th anniversary of Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, which was supposed to bring together the best players in the invited tournaments and the four historical champions of the title in the EVO.

With this decision, EVO once again states that esports is a sector that can adapt to any circumstance. And although it is obvious that a face – to – face tournament is not the same as an online one , the vast majority of spectators will be able to content themselves with continuing to experience the best fighting game competition , something that fans of traditional sports can not do .
