What are functional skills exams?

The functional skills exam, which is taken by students who have just started to learn English and/or maths, tests their fundamental skills. It covers reading, writing, listening, speaking, maths and grammar. The exam takes about 2 hours to take.

You will be given a list of tasks and questions to answer. Some of the answers will need to be written down. You will be expected to write your own answers on the sheet provided.

If you are unsure of the answer, you can check the correct answers in the booklet. Once you have written your answers, you will then sit the exam. You can also bring your own notes. Functional skills exam Some people like to write out the questions in front of them. This allows them to make sure they’ve read each question correctly.

Once you have passed your test, you will be sent a certificate. The results will be added to your record. This means that you can show them to any company or person to prove that you have the skills that they are looking for.

It is important to remember that the functional skills exam is a test only. It doesn’t mean that you are qualified for employment or for University study. You can retake the exam, as long as it’s within 6 months of your original date. This is to ensure that your ability has not deteriorated.
