Why Singapore has the best primary schools and international schools in the world

by Uneeb Khan

Singapore is one of the biggest success stories in the post Second World War period. Its rise is particularly impressive given its colonial history, a very diverse population, lack of many natural resources and the tiny geographical area that it boasts. That it could overcome such humongous disadvantages in such a short period of time to become one of the wealthiest countries in the world with a enviable living standard is a testimony to its people’s ingenuity and resourcefulness.

Making the most of what they had and punching above their weight has become a way of life with the Singaporeans. They realised very early on that for them to become world beaters they had to put in place an education system that was comparable to the best in the world. It is no surprise, therefore, that  international schools in Singapore are some of the best in the world.  As are its kindergartens, international primary schools and indeed its colleges and universities.

Providing a world class education to its people is an article of faith with the people of Singapore and this reflects in the excellence displayed by all its educational institutions. Let us take the example of a very well known K to 12 international school in Singapore

Global Indian International School Singapore

Global Indian International School Singapore. Is one of the best known K to 12 schools in Singapore. It provides its students with cutting edge infrastructure as well as some of the most qualified and experienced teachers in the world. In keeping with the Singaporean convention of leaving no stone unturned when it comes to providing the best education to children, GIIS Singapore an international primary school par excellence has pulled all the stops when it comes to providing its students access to the world’s leading curricula. These include Global Montessori Plus, International Baccalaureate Primary Years, Cambridge CLSP, Cambridge IGCSE, CBSE and International Baccalaureate Diploma programme.

Part of a globally renowned group of Indian international schools, GIIS Singapore boasts fabulous academic results and its students get placed in some of the finest colleges and universities in the world. It is not surprising then that the school is the first choice for many parents in Singapore-expats and local Singaporeans alike.

The above was the example of an Indian international school in Singapore. Let us now look at another example of an outstanding international school in the island nation-this time an American one-

Singapore American School

It is one of the best K to 12 schools in the region providing its students access to the world class American curriculum. The popularity of this sterling international primary school can be gauged by the fact that it has more than 4000 students on its rolls. Founded way back in 1956, its highlight is a sprawling 36 acre campus with its own rain forest making it the largest K to 12 campus in the world. The school is divided into four sections-Early Learning Center (Preschool and pre-kindergarten), Elementary School (Kindergarten to 5th grade), Middle School (6th to 8th grade) and High School (9th to 12th grade).

The school provides its students with an outstanding American education, but with an international perspective, in light of the fact that Singapore is intrinsically as international a place as one can possibly be.  What the school excels in is at personalising education in light of the fact that every student learns in a different way. The school is quite remarkable in the sense that its growth has mirrored that of the nation of Singapore and it, therefore, holds a very special place in the hearts of its citizens.

The school provides special counsellors as well who mentor and guide the high school students with regard to college and university placement. It is not surprising that the students of SAS manage to obtain admission to the best schools anywhere.

Conclusion

Singapore needs to excel at everything it takes up as that is the only way a small country with very limited resources can make itself valuable to the world. In order for that to happen, it had to ensure that its children and young people received the best education in the world. That explains why its schools are so good. Then there is the fact that its expat population who are such an integral part of the success of the island nation need to feel comfortable living in Singapore with their families. One of the factors that help them feel that way is the presence of fantastic international schools where their children could receive education compatible with international standards and requirements. That explains the presence of some really good international schools in the island nations. All in all Singapore does have a very large number of excellent schools that are easily some of the best in the world.
