As a woman, it’s essential to receive regular wellness exams for your vulva, breasts and uterus. These medical appointments can be referred to as gynecological exams, annual exams or well woman exams.

What happens during a women’s wellness visit depends on your age and medical history. Generally, these appointments include a physical exam, breast exam and pelvic exam with Pap smear.

Pap Smear

Pap smears are an essential tool in screening for cervical cancer, a type that affects the cervix. They help detect cervical intraepithelial neoplasia — when precancerous cells are found on the cervix — as well as human papillomavirus (HPV), which increases women’s chances of developing cervical cancer.

A Pap smear can be performed during a pelvic exam by your healthcare provider. During this procedure, you lie on an exam table with feet in stirrups as they gently insert a small instrument called a speculum into your vagina. Once they can see the cervix, they use a brush to collect cells for examination under a microscope.

After your Pap smear has been completed, your provider may ask you questions about any symptoms or concerns. They also take into account medical history such as your menstrual cycle and whether there are any family members who have been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer.

Results of Pap smears are usually available within one to three weeks and will indicate either a negative (normal) or positive result.

If your Pap smear reveals abnormal cells, it’s wise to have another test in a few months to check if the cells resolve on their own. If not, your doctor may suggest performing either a colposcopy or biopsy in order to rule out cervical cancer.

To ensure a normal Pap smear, it’s best to lead an active lifestyle and take vitamins and folic acid supplements. Without these, the test can be more challenging to read and may result in false-positives. Furthermore, make sure there are no heavy periods or use of lubricants or sprays near the cervix before taking this test.

Mammogram

Mammograms are X-ray images of your breasts used by doctors to detect early signs of breast cancer and other problems that might cause breast pain, like lumps. They’re highly recommended by the American Cancer Society for both screening and diagnosis purposes; regular mammograms offer the best chance to catch breast cancer when it’s most treatable.

It is essential to get your mammogram regularly, even if your family has a history of breast cancer. Doctors suggest that women begin getting one every year at age 40 or every other year for those 50 and older.

Mammograms should not be done during your period, as the breasts can be more sensitive then. Furthermore, it is unsafe to have a mammogram during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Mammograms are a straightforward procedure that uses an X-ray machine to photograph your breasts. A technician will place a plastic plate on each breast and press them down, flattening the skin in order to create an image of your breasts.

A radiologist (a medical professional trained to evaluate pictures) will review your X-rays and let you know if anything appears amiss. If the results are abnormal, additional tests such as mammograms may be necessary.

When getting a mammogram, your doctor will ask questions about your health and family medical history. Additionally, they may request that you remove all jewelry and any clothing which could interfere with the X-ray image.

Your doctor will then issue a prescription for the mammogram test, which usually takes around 10 minutes and results are typically available within several weeks.

Blood Test

Blood tests are an often-used and helpful way to detect various health conditions. Doctors use them to diagnose conditions, monitor organ problems and measure how well you’re responding to treatment.

Most blood tests are painless, though you may feel a mild prick or pinch when the needle is inserted into a vein in your arm. The process takes only minutes and doesn’t cause any discomfort.

Before the test, your healthcare provider will ask if you have any allergies such as an intolerance to blood or needles. They may also suggest that you abstain from eating or drinking anything for several hours prior to taking the test.

Phlebotomists use needles to draw blood from veins in your arm. They then place the sample into a tube and wait for it to clot, before testing it for various chemical studies.

Your doctor will then analyze the blood test results and share them with you.

One of the most frequent blood tests is a complete blood count (CBC), which counts the amount of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets in your blood. A low count could indicate dehydration, anemia or bleeding.

Another test to consider is an arterial blood test, which draws blood from your artery rather than your vein to measure how much oxygen your body is getting. This more sensitive method than a simple blood count can reveal issues like heart disease or cancer.

Other common blood tests include the lipid panel, which measures levels of HDL (“good”) and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol as well as triglycerides–a type of fat. This test can give you insight into your risk for coronary heart disease.

Weight Test

If you’re serious about fitness and health, taking the weight test is a must. It serves as an indicator of progress and guarantees you remain on track towards reaching your objectives. To ensure accuracy, the test should be administered under medical guidance from an accredited professional; this way, there won’t be any unpleasant surprises down the line.

This test is no easy feat as it requires the use of various sensors such as two accelerometers, a heart rate monitor and computerized scale. Thankfully, the procedure is performed under the expert guidance of one of Niraamaya Clinic’s experienced doctors. You’ll come away feeling more assured about taking on fitness challenges ahead. Plus, having this experience helps cut healthcare costs in the long run by improving overall wellbeing and decreasing disease risks.
