How is the Pacific Whiting industry doing today?

by Uneeb Khan

The Pacific whiting  fishery is a species of marine fish that is caught in the Pacific Ocean off the coasts of Oregon and Washington. The fishery was born in the early 1950s, but it didn’t become an important source of income until 1974 when commercial fishing vessels began catching thousands of tons per year. The peak years were from 1974 to 1978 when the fleet harvested 160,000 to 200,000 tons annually. However, since 2010 there have been periods with low catch limits because scientists believe these restrictions will help ensure the long-term health of the fishery. In 2016 over 100 fishing vessels brought in approximately 88,600 tons from this Oregon/Washington fishery

The Pacific Whiting industry was born in the early 1950s.

Pacific whiting, also known as Pacific sanddabs, is a small fish found in the Pacific Ocean from California to Alaska. They’re not true whiting which are members of the Gadidae family. This species is often called “Pacific Whiting” or “Pacific sand dab” in the United States and Canada; however, it’s known as “hake” in other parts of the world.

The peak years were 1974 to 1978 when the fleet harvested 160,000 to 200,000 tons of Pacific whiting annually.

  • The peak years were 1974 to 1978 when the fleet harvested 160,000 to 200,000 tons of Pacific whiting annually.
  • Since then, however, the industry has been on a downward trend.
  • In 2019, we estimate that Pacific whiting landings will be between 70 and 80 thousand tons.

Conclusion

This year, the Pacific whiting fishery is struggling to rebound from its lowest catch levels since it began in 1950. The fleet caught about 88,600 tons of whiting in 2016 and many analysts expect that number to continue declining as stocks continue to recover from overfishing. However, there are some signs of hope for the industry as several companies have recently built new vessels or brought back old ones into service with plans to increase their capacity by double digits each year through 2022
