How to Draw A Cross with Wings

Step 1

The cross-section of this cross with wings is a beautiful mix of simplicity and decoration. You can draw a rough cross with a pencil and ruler to prepare this part of the drawing.

It could also be a few simple lines on top of each other to form this simple cross.

You can then use your pencil to draw a square outline around these lines to create a more conventional cross.

Once this rough cross is drawn, we can start drawing the actual outline of the final cross. When drawing the actual cross, we strongly recommend using a ruler.

The design features curved lines, but the leading edges are straight. First, we draw the central main pillar of the cross.

The sides are straight but slightly angled, so the top of the cross is slightly wider than the lowest point.

Each point of the cross has a pointed section. This can be drawn with a slightly curved line going outwards and inwards again to form a pointed section.

You will see a small gap left at the top of the cross, where we will add the horizontal pieces later in the guide. Speaking of horizontal parts, let’s go to step 2 and add them.

Step 2

In this step, we will do what we did in the first part of this crossing with the wing design.

The main differences will be that this time it will be horizontal instead of vertical, and these columns will be smaller.

Otherwise, the idea is broadly the same. This means that, again, we use a ruler for the straight edges of the columns.

You’ll see how we draw these horizontal columns if you’ve drawn a pencil guide. You will also see that they will fill in the gaps created previously.

In the first phase, the sides of the vertical columns were slightly horizontal, but this time they will be perfectly level.

As mentioned above, these columns will be significantly shorter than the main vertical column. Some crosses will have longer horizontal columns, but our style here will have short ones.

However, you can make them a little longer if you want! You can draw the sides with a ruler and pen, regardless of length.

Like the vertical column, each will end in a spearhead-like design. Again, these can be drawn with curved lines ending in a pointed tip.

When drawing these horizontal columns, try to make them as symmetrical as possible. You can even measure the straight edges with your ruler to ensure they’re the same length.

Once you’re happy with how these pillars look, we can move on to step 3 and add interior details to the cross.

Step 3

The winged cross we draw here naturally lies flat on its side. Ideally, we want it to look like a physical object, and we can achieve that with just a few simple line details.

These simple line details help make this winged cross look more carved in stone or cast in metal.

You can later decide what material the cross should be made of when designing the color.

First, let’s focus on the line details that create the 3D illusion. To do this, we’re drawing a smaller version of the cross you drew in the first two steps.

However, there will be some differences. For example, try making the lines for this inner cross slightly thinner than those for the main outline.

Also, if you look at the horizontal dots at the top of the cross, you’ll notice that some extra small lines reach the outer outline.

It’s a simple touch but will add more three-dimensionality to the cross. Some small dots on the horizontal columns add some structure. That’s all, so we can move on to step 4 of the guide.

Step 4

So far, in this tutorial on how to draw a cross with wings, we’ve created a really cute cross. However, the second aspect of this design is missing: the wings!

Wings may look simple, but they can be surprisingly complicated. The hardest thing about this look is that you want it to be ideally symmetrical.

This can be harder than you think, so taking it slow and following the reference image closely is a good idea. We recommend starting at the sides of the top pillar.

Each side has a curved line starting from that side. The peaks of these curves should be approximately level with the top peak of the cross-column.

This is where it can get tricky, as there are many subtle feather details. The easiest way to get these details done is to work on each small detail individually, then alternate on both sides.

This is another step where we recommend taking your pencil and drawing a rough version. Only this time, the rough draft should be more detailed to prepare for the final drafts.

Some thin sections slope downwards at the base of each wing, and these, too, are symmetrical. After the outlines of the wings are drawn, we can proceed to some interior details.

Step 5

Now we are ready to finish this drawing of a cross with wings for you to look forward to coloring in the last step.

We’ll show you the final details to complete our design, but you can also add your ideas at this step.

Before drawing these details, you should erase any pencil lines you drew to plan the drawing. They are no longer needed and might get in the way.

The details we will add in this step are inside the wings. These are all simple and small details, but they help make the wings more textured and realistic.

Again, these details should ideally be symmetrical, but you can change them if needed. Before proceeding to the last stage, you can add some ideas to the drawing.

There are so many ways to unleash your creativity! One idea would be to use wings to draw rays of light around the cross to emphasize the spiritual aspect of the design.

You could also design a background or write an inspirational message in an elegant font. These are just a few ideas, but we’re sure you have many more ideas you could use!

Step 6

We kept the colors a bit darker and muted for our version of this cross with a wing design.

Earlier, we mentioned how you can decide what material the cross should be made of.

For our design, we opted for a gray color scheme that gives the impression that the cross is made of stone or perhaps carved out of stone. This is a great look that you could reproduce for your design.

Even the wings look set in stone because we used light gray tones. Varying colors with light and dark tones can help make colors more dynamic.

You can also add shading this way, regardless of your chosen color. You could also use so many other colors for this design.

For example, you could give the image a lighter look, in which case you could use some gold for the cross instead.

You can also paint the cross with shades of yellow to make it look bright.

Using different art tools, mediums, and techniques can be a great way to create different looks for colors, and you can get some interesting results.
