How to Teach Your Pet New Tricks

by Yasir Asif

Finding an impressive trick that requires lots of patience is training your dog to follow a target stick (or fly swatter!) around you, such as the target stick trick! For additional training tips and videos, check out our free app!

Recall is an essential behavior to teach your pup. Start off by using treats or their favorite toy to lure them closer, gradually increasing distance until your dog reliably comes running back when called.

Take a Bow

Bowing can be an amazing trick to teach your dog. Not only will it show off his or her intelligence, but it’s also an effective way to keep him entertained and from becoming bored or distracted.

To teach your dog to take a bow, start by having them stand up. Place a treat in front of their nose and move it down gradually until their elbows and chest touch the ground – this should lure them into taking the bow position and reward with both treats and verbal praise!

Continue this process until your dog can perform the bow command without your having to hold down their nose. While this process may take time, with practice your pup should quickly learn their new trick! For maximum efficiency consider breaking this process down into smaller training sessions if needed.

Yawn

Yawns are natural behaviors and it should be straightforward to train your dog to do them on command. To start training this trick, ensure your pup is sleepy and prepared to focus on you; take him for a walk or play with him until they’re completely relaxed and tired before beginning this training exercise.

Yawning can be used as an indicator that your dog is feeling relaxed or at peace. If they yawn during or after an activity designed to address behavioral problems, that indicates they have learned something and let go of any stress they may be carrying around with them.

Arrange yourself between your legs with a treat in hand, wait for him or her to yawn, click, and reward it. Continue this process until your dog begins yawning on command!

Retrieve

For dogs who love objects, teaching them to retrieve can be an impressive showpiece. Begin by having them lie down on a mat. Next, put something out front of them like food or toys and encourage them to pick it up and bring it back. Reward them once they do this successfully! Repeat this process several times daily as you gradually decrease how much help is given them.

This trick may require more advanced training from you and your pet than other tricks on our list; but it’s so cute. Train them to lick an almost empty yogurt cup briefly before moving it away from them using words or sound signals as reinforcement each time they do it.

Go to Bed

Teaching your dog how to find their bed can help ensure a restful night’s rest and prevent barking when someone reaches for the doorknob or knocks at the door. While this requires some practice and patience, soon your pet will pick it up quickly!

Start off by encouraging your dog to sniff or look at his bed, rewarding him when they do with a treat. Over time, gradually increase the frequency of rewards when he moves closer or approaches it with one or both paws touching it or finally gets on it.

Once they’re comfortable in bed, begin backing off gradually until they can lie down without you nearby.

Touch

This trick can help your dog quickly touch an object on command or respond when someone approaches in a crowd. Start with a treat in your palm and present it to your pet; if they touch it with their nose, click and reward them! Repeat in various environments or locations while changing how your hand or object is presented so as to increase its challenge level for them.

Once your dog has become adept at touching a moving hand target, you can teach him or her to touch other objects like paper towels and books as targets. Practice short and sweet training sessions until your pup reliably touches these targets at various distances; once this behavior becomes reliable you can add verbal cues.
