Did you know that June 27th was National Fitness Day? It’s true! In honor of this day, we’ve put together a list of fun and exciting activities you can do to get fit, feel great, and spend time with your friends and family! What is National Fitness Day?

National Fitness Day is an annual event sponsored by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control, and other organizations. The day is meant as a time for families to get outside together, enjoy nature, stay active, eat healthy food, and have fun. It was established in 1979 as part of President Jimmy Carter’s Healthy People Initiative. Since then it has been celebrated on four different days each year.


This year National Fitness Day will be celebrated on Tuesday September 4th with events all across America. There are many ways you can participate depending on your interests or location- you could go hiking with friends or go apple picking at a local farm if you live near one.

The History of National Fitness Day

National Fitness Day started in 1962 as a part of President Kennedy’s physical fitness campaign. It is held annually on September 5th, which is also the date of President Kennedy’s birth. The goal of National Fitness Day is to encourage people of all ages to be more active.

There are many ways you can participate in National Fitness day, including joining in a fun fitness activity with your friends or family members. Some fitness activities you could partake in are playing sports like volleyball, having a dance party, or even going for a hike. Another way to get fit is by picking up an instrument and making some music, such as on drums, piano, guitar etc.

You don’t have to do anything too strenuous though; just find something that fits your interests and jump right in. And if you feel creative this time of year, there are plenty of arts and crafts projects that require some healthy amounts of movement! On this day in 1968 President Lyndon Johnson declared the first Thursday of every September shall be designated as ‘National Physical Fitness and Sports Day’. The President would go on to say that Americans should set aside a day for vigorous physical activity.

There are a variety of ways you can celebrate National Fitness Day. You could walk with friends or family members for 30 minutes around your neighborhood or you could try a new sport like golfing or fishing.

Ways to Get Involved in National Fitness Day

There are many ways you can get involved in National Fitness Day. You can go to a local event, volunteer with your local YMCA or Boys and Girls Club, or start your own event.
