Solving Challenges Faced by Employers in a Remote Performance Review

by Uneeb Khan

In times of global pandemic, many companies have faced risks and challenges in ensuring a smooth workflow. Not to mention, things have changed significantly, from adopting remote to hybrid working models to encouraging digital learning at the workplace. There has been a complete transition in the ways organizations work.

However, all this brings a plethora of advantages as well as challenges for employers. For example, there have been savings on office facilities and infrastructure, on one hand, whereas this also poses a challenge for employers to track and review employee performance. We all know that performance assessment has a crucial role to play in organizational and individual growth. Thus, companies need to conduct performance reviews on a regular basis to analyze employee contributions toward achieving business goals.

Nevertheless, employee performance management is not an easy task, especially when employees are working from remote locations. This is because while employees are working from home or remotely, they might be faced with several situations that have an impact on their productivity and performance. Therefore, employers are required to consider such factors and follow a comprehensive approach to begin remote performance reviews.

In this blog, we have shared insights on different challenges faced in remote performance reviews and ways to deal with them.

Some common challenges in remote performance management

Communication barriers

In a remote working environment, it is harder to connect with the team. It might become difficult to keep all the team members on the same page as there is a lack of face-to-face meetings. This indirectly affects employee performance, as if there is no clear communication about the work process or miscommunication, there will be flaws in the task completion. Moreover, without face-to-face meetings, it becomes hard for employers to keep their workforce engaged.

To overcome this issue, managers can take help from online communication platforms that encourage frequent team interactions and one-to-one virtual communication. A strong feedback system must be implemented so that employees can share their suggestions without any hassle.

Lack of resources

One undeniable fact about remote working is that it cannot be exactly similar to conventional office working. Dissimilarity lies in the work environment and resource availability. The lack of appropriate resources leads to a downfall in productivity. Thus, during the employee performance management process, employers must ensure that any such challenge is not responsible for degrading employees’ performance.

To address this concern, business owners must provide adequate resources to their employees. Besides, employers should remember that in a remote working model, they must be flexible with performance assessment and should not compare it with pre-pandemic performance.

Unclear business objectives

When business objectives are not properly aligned with job responsibilities, employees tend to move away from achieving both organizational and personal goals. Particularly, in the remote working environment, as there are fewer opportunities to be physically present in the office and communicate, employees might sway from objectives. This can further lead to degraded performance. Hence, companies might have to revisit their goals and objectives to be achieved.

Employers can overcome this challenge by setting realistic goals for employees to achieve. These goals must be aligned properly with the workforce, keeping in mind the capabilities and interests of the employees. An effective way to simplify the performance review process is to incorporate employee performance management tools. This software enables a clear line of sight on business goals as well as allows seamless collaboration between team members and employers. Besides, regardless of the working model, make sure to recognize and reward employees for performing well. This will help them to stay motivated and do the best of their abilities.
